For this client I designed his logo as well as suggested layout for the website. Because he is also a very good amature photographer, I used his pictures in my design.

The Inspiration: in a Nutshell
Once Upon a time...
...in the tiny rural town of Exeter (Ontario, Canada) lived the tiniest population of the most unusual squirrels. They were white. Not 'Albino' white. They didn't have pink eyes or anything like that. They were ordinary everyday grey squirrels without the grey. The fact is, for the longest time it seemed that the only place you could find this special squirrel in the whole wide world was in that tiny, little town of Exeter. Incidentally, for the longest time, on all this enormous planet, Exeter was also the only place you could find another unique creature- Tim Watcher.

Thus, from the memories of a child growing up in that unique little corner of the Earth, sprang the inspiration for "In a Nutshell".

The Point: in a Nutshell
I am naturally a slow speaker (Note: that's 'slow' not 'stupid'... there's a difference). For the past 20 years I have been giving lectures to audiences of upward of 800 people at a time. What I have noticed is that, because of the speed of my natural speach, I have to cut...alot...to finish on time. The plus side is that my lectures are simple and to the point. I eliminate alot of 'filler' that tends to clutter, I have noticed, the content of the talks of other speakers.

A comic strip is like being a slow speaker only the constraint isn't time but space. The cartoonist is force to make his point with few words; to edit; to simplify; to get to the point. It's as if, every time I get to give a little observation in my comic strip, I'm puting it 'in a nutshell'.

The Characters: in a Nutshell sketch of timmy

Timmy- the boy doesn't try to be funny, but he does seem to have a sixth sense that makes him say things that either makes others laugh or makes 'em sock him in the eye. He lives his life oblivious to the rules that say, 'You can't do that!' and so he tries everything.

The Squirrel- on the other hand, is decidedly intentional. He knows exactly who he is, what his purpose in life is, and, more importantly,... what irritates the dog, Thunder. His confidence is his charm but it's also his undoing. For, like our boy, the squirrel is often taken off guard by the reactions of others to his not-so-innocent but to-the-point observations.

Thunder- the dog ... is a dog. Old enough to know it will be fed, taken out for a walk, and incessantly manhandled. Also old enouth to know that it doesn't really have any particular interests. It eats when it's hungry, walks when taken, and deals with incessant manhandlers in it's own particular manner.
